So I’m in the process of possibly selling my 2007 S60 R to get something with some more height. On top of that, I need something that’s somewhat fast, less common than most crossovers, and with higher feature content than my current car. On top of that, I think I actually want something new.

The options are limited, but one that stands out is the Kia Sportage SX. For ~31K, you get a 260hp crossover, loaded with nav, heated/cooled seats, dual panel sunroofs, etc.

The Good:
- it’s actually fast. From 0-20 it doesn’t have a whole lot punch, but from 40-80, this thing flies.
- it’s built well. There are some hard plastics, but it feels well put together and the leather is soft.
- it’s pretty unique for a crossover. You don’t see Sportages nearly as often as CR-V’s, RAV4’s, and Forester’s.
- it’s hard to find anything similar with such high feature content and power.
- it’s got a proper automatic instead of a CVT
- regular fuel

The Bad:
- there’s a fair amount of hard plastics, which I’m not used to.
- the wheels look chintzy
- dealer’s are stiff on price despite it (most likely) being the last year of the design
- 21MPG
- 4 boring color choices
- no manual option (biggest hurdle of them all)

Overall:
It’s like the 2007-2010 BMW X3 of 2016, but with more features. The rides super rough, it’s fast, and it’s super jerky/sensitive at lower speeds. Overall, I’m impressed and I’m 75% sure I’m going to forward on this.

For height, are you looking for ride height, seat height, or cargo space height?

Ah. My vote would go to the Forester or Outback, but I’m a subie fanboy. My brother’s wife has the slightly more minivanish one (Sorrento?) and he says it’s a really good vehicle, but he also says Kias are sort of hit or miss. Some of them are great (Sorrento) and some of them are god-awful (Optima, which he described as having all the worst parts of a dodge neon and a lincoln town car at the same time)

Why do you need/want a lifted ride height crossover over a wagon?

I don’t have children.

I hike a lot and I find myself on a lot of roads where I have to literally crawl in my R. I need something that can take bumps and some dirt a little better.

I like the CX-5, but I can only get a FWD base model with a stick. I’m looking mostly at the top trim line on most models I look at.

Subaru’s are as popular as Corolla’s here in Boulder. I’m going to see a new Forester XT soon, but I don’t think I can bring myself to get an Outback in life quite yet.

The other issue is that Subaru’s here stick on the lot for maybe a week - wiggle room is super slim.

I like the Sportage (and its corporate twin the Tucson). My biggest complaint off the top of my head are the rear turn signals, which - like the VW Tiguan - are bumper-mounted, not in the main tail light assembly. I like that it looks like a nice sneaker.

My complaints pretty much were blindspots, and only an automatic transmission. Otherwise, it pretty much fits the bill...I hate thinking about where else I could spend 30k, however...

Such an awful design flaw!

In a world (or nation) so regulated I don’t know how those are okay. Its not my first place to be looking for signals.
